🗺️ Sitemap Link Monitor

Every URL in your sitemap,
checked on a schedule.

Broken links hurt SEO and frustrate users — but you won't notice them until Google does. MonitorGiant reads your sitemap.xml and quietly verifies every URL on your schedule, sending one consolidated alert when something breaks.

✓ HEAD-only — zero page load overhead Paid add-on — from $8/mo Consolidated alerts — not one per URL

How it works

Set up takes under two minutes. After that, MonitorGiant handles the rest automatically.

1

Add your sitemap URL

Enter your domain or the direct path to your sitemap. MonitorGiant automatically discovers sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml, and nested sub-sitemaps.

2

Choose your scan frequency

Pick how often to run: daily for small sites, every few hours for active blogs, or hourly for high-traffic platforms where a broken product page costs revenue.

3

Get one alert per scan

When broken links are found, MonitorGiant sends a single consolidated alert listing all affected URLs — not one notification per URL. Fix the issues; the next clean scan confirms all links are healthy.

What gets checked, and how

Every scan goes beyond a simple 200 OK check. Here's what MonitorGiant looks for.

🗺️

Automatic sitemap discovery

Point MonitorGiant at your domain and it fetches sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml, or any custom sitemap path automatically. Nested sitemaps are followed recursively — no manual URL lists required.

HEAD-only checks — fast and lightweight

Each URL is checked with an HTTP HEAD request, not a full page load. This means faster scans, lower bandwidth usage, and no side effects on your server — even across hundreds of URLs.

🚨

Consolidated alerts, not a flood

When a scan finds broken links, MonitorGiant groups all failures into a single alert with a summary count and a full list. You get one notification per scan cycle — not one per broken URL.

🔀

Redirect chain detection

Identifies URLs that redirect through multiple hops before reaching a final destination. Long redirect chains slow your site and confuse crawlers. MonitorGiant flags them so you can clean them up.

📊

Response time tracking per URL

Tracks how fast each page responds over time. Slow URLs that still return 200 OK can silently hurt SEO and user experience — response time history helps you spot regressions before they become problems.

🔄

Scan diff — new and removed URLs

After each scan, MonitorGiant compares the current sitemap to the previous one. New URLs added and URLs removed are logged and optionally alerted — useful for catching accidental page deletions or unexpected publishing.

📅

Flexible scan frequency

From daily checks on smaller sites to hourly sweeps on large publishing platforms. Set the scan interval that fits your publishing cadence and SLA requirements.

📋

Full scan history and reports

Every scan is logged with a timestamp, total URLs checked, pass/fail counts, and a link-by-link breakdown. Review history to see when a broken link first appeared and how long it went unnoticed.

Issues detected

Every type of broken link
your SEO cares about

!

404 Not Found

Pages that no longer exist — the most common issue after content restructures or CMS migrations.

!

5xx Server Errors

Pages that exist but crash on request — often hidden behind a CDN that serves a cached copy to real users.

Redirect chains (3xx)

URLs that bounce through multiple redirects before reaching a final page — each hop costs PageRank and latency.

Slow response time

Pages that respond but take too long — a leading signal of infrastructure problems before they become full outages.

±

Sitemap changes (diff)

URLs added or removed since the last scan — useful for catching accidental deletions or unexpected content publishing.

Common questions

What is a Sitemap Link Monitor?
A Sitemap Link Monitor reads your sitemap.xml file and checks every listed URL on a schedule — verifying each one returns a healthy HTTP response. Broken links (4xx errors), server errors (5xx), redirect chains, and slow responses are flagged and reported in a consolidated alert.
Does the monitor crawl the full page or just check the URL?
MonitorGiant uses HTTP HEAD requests, which verify that a URL exists and responds without downloading the full page body. This keeps scans fast and lightweight with no performance impact on your server — even when checking hundreds of URLs per scan.
How many URLs can be checked per scan?
Link limits depend on your plan: Starter (50 links), Standard (200), Growth (500), Business (1,500), Enterprise (5,000+). If your sitemap has more URLs than your plan allows, the monitor checks the first N URLs in sitemap order. Contact us to discuss a custom limit.
